Thieves are now using AI deepfakes to trick companies into sending them money

The verge - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 19:14
Illustration by Alex Castro and Grayson Blackmon / The Verge

It seems like every few days there’s another example of a convincing deepfake going viral or another free, easy-to-use piece of software (some even made for mobile) that can generate convincing video or audio that’s designed to trick someone into believing a piece of virtual artifice is real. But according to The Wall Street Journal, there may soon be serious financial and legal ramifications to the proliferation of deepfake technology.

The publication reported last week that a UK energy company’s chief executive was tricked into wiring €200,000 (or about $220,000 USD) to a Hungarian supplier because he believed his boss was instructing him to do so. But the energy company’s insurance firm, Euler Hermes Group SA, told the WSJ that a...

Apple’s September 10th hardware event is just a few days away, and there’s lots of news and hardware to look forward to. Reports indicate that you should expect three new iPhones with the same screen sizes and resolutions as the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max. The 2019 lineup will also likely have a different naming scheme: if one popular rumor is true, your next phone might be called the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

What else is new? There might be a lot, actually. We spent some time in the Apple rumor mill and ranked every major rumor based on how excited (or disappointed) we’ll be if they are (or aren’t) revealed.

1 ) Behold, the camera square!

The new iPhone’s most distinctive feature may be impossible to miss: a giant square on the back of the...

Facebook throttles clickbait parody site Reductress for sharing too much clickbait

The verge - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 18:58

Reductress is a well-known feminist satire site that skewers clickbait-y women’s media — popular articles include “Wealthy Friend A Totally Free Spirit” and “These Women Are Beautiful, Even Though They Are All Freshwater Catfish.” Facebook periodically tries to cut back on sensational, low-quality “clickbait” content by reducing the reach of pages that post it. Facebook is also a gargantuan platform policed by a combination of automated systems and overworked moderators. You won’t believe what happened next.

This morning, site co-founder Sarah Pappalardo posted a Facebook alert that “Reductress has reduced distribution because of repeated sharing of clickbait.” According to Pappalardo, Facebook cited a couple of examples of clickbait...

Android 10 has a terrible bug that can’t be fixed

BGR - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 18:30

Google released the final version of Android 10 for all four Pixel generations just a couple of days ago, but it looks like the software upgrade is hardly the smooth experience Pixel users had hoped for. Earlier this week we learned that several Pixel models froze on the boot screen during the update, with the whole thing lasting anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. You either had to wait for the phone to move past the boot screen or downgrade to Android 9 and attempt the update later.

It turns out that’s the least of your worries, as Pixel owners are now reporting an even more annoying problem for devices already running Android 10. The current build kills sensor functionality on various Pixel phones, and there’s no way to fix it.

General Motors will use Google’s new Android Automotive OS to power the infotainment systems in its cars starting in 2021, the two companies announced on Thursday. That means Google Assistant, Maps, and other automotive-approved Android apps will be available in GM’s cars via the Play Store without requiring the use of an Android smartphone.

All GM brands outside of China will offer the native automotive version of Android, which is built on Android P, though it won’t come to all models right away. Cars outfitted with Android Automotive OS will still allow drivers or passengers to use Apple’s CarPlay as well as the smartphone-powered version of Android Auto, GM tells The Verge. GM will share the access to some anonymized data, according...

Samsung is canceling all Galaxy Fold preorders so it can ‘rethink the entire customer experience’

The verge - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 18:12
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Samsung may have finally fixed the Galaxy Fold and confirmed new release dates for the foldable phone, but anyone who preordered the phone earlier this year may still be out of luck: Samsung is emailing customers to cancel all preorders while it “rethink[s] the entire customer experience” surrounding the sale of the phone, as seen in a tweets from YouTuber M. Brandon Lee and others.

A Samsung representative confirmed that the company is canceling all extant Galaxy Fold preorders placed online through Samsung. It’s a strange move, given that Samsung is so close to releasing the fixed phone. As a consolation prize, Samsung is offering customers a $250 credit for the Samsung store, but it’s likely a disappointment for anyone who had been...

Jabra’s Elite 75t earbuds boost battery life and make the long-awaited switch to USB-C

The verge - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 18:00
Image: Jabra

Jabra’s Elite 65t true wireless earbuds were the default recommended alternative to AirPods for a long time. They were one of the first pairs to nail the basics of solid connectivity, satisfactory battery life, and good-enough sound quality. But other companies like Sony, Beats, and Samsung have managed to catch up in recent months. So it makes sense that at IFA 2019, Jabra is ready to unveil what’s next. The Elite 75t earbuds aren’t a significant change of pace from their predecessor, but they combine numerous improvements to make for a nicely upgraded product overall.

Battery life has increased by 50 percent to 7.5 hours on a single charge, they now charge with USB-C, and they’re also 20 percent smaller, which Jabra claims means...

Facebook accidentally exposed over 400 million user records, but hey, at least they have a new dating app

BGR - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 17:44

Oh Facebook, you just can't seem to stop tripping over your own big, dumb feet, can you?  Today, the world's largest social network and noted privacy destroyer is introducing a brand new product to the United States. It's a dating app that aims to take on the likes of Tinder and Bumble, and while it's been rolling out to a number of countries since late last year, you probably won't need to rely on it if you're looking to meet new people.

Why? I'm so glad you asked! You see, that new Facebook feature that is designed to connect you with people you might not already know completely pales in comparison to the wealth of personal information the social network somehow leaked and was recently found on an unprotected server. Why wait for Facebook Dating to connect you with someone new when the company accidentally allowed the user records of over 419 million people to be posted online?
