AirPods are down to an all-time low – but these popular earphones are still $100 less

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 15:27

There are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to want a pair of Apple AirPods. First and foremost, the design is so cool. The AirPods carrying case is compact enough to fit just about anywhere, and the earphones themselves are wonderfully tiny. AirPods also offer great sound quality and they're perfect for people who commute or walk around a lot around town. Since they don't isolate sound, you can still hear most of what's going on around you. That means you're less likely to accidentally walk somewhere you shouldn't or step out in front of a moving vehicle.

AirPods are indeed terrific headphones and if you want a pair, now is the time to get them. Amazon is selling AirPods 2 right now for just $129, which matches the all-time low price we saw ahead of the holidays. Simply put, you're not going to find a better price anywhere. Also of note, the $199 AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case are on sale today as well, so you can snag a pair for $169 if you plan to use a wireless charger. Apple charges $79 for the wireless charging case on its own, so that's a great deal.

Apple AirPods with Charging Case (Latest Model): $129.00

Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case (Latest Model): $169.00

Before you commit to AirPods though, there's another option you should definitely consider. Many people prefer the sound isolation they get from earphones with silicone tips. Since they lock everything in, they also typically have much better-sounding bass as well. The SoundPEATS TrueFree Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds are some of the most popular true wireless earbuds we've ever covered here on the site, and they retail for around $30 so they're always far less expensive than Apple's AirPods. Clip the on-site coupon and use the promo code UT2OXOVI, however, and you can snag a pair for just $22.51. That's over $100 less than AirPods even while AirPods are down to their lowest price ever!

SoundPEATS TrueFree Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds
  • TrueFree wireless earbuds support devices with Bluetooth version 4.0 or above, both iOS and Android, and also other Bluetooth-enabled devices.
  • The earbuds work 3-4 hours per charge. The charging case provides 4-5 times full charge for both earbuds.
  • Please rest assured, there are strengthened magnets in both the earbuds and charging case. You will not have the earbuds fall out or missing in your pocket or backpack.
  • Adopt professional chipset and latest Bluetooth 5.0 to ensure your great experience with fast, stable and efficient transmission.
  • Lightweight charging case at only 28g is built all for your convenience to carry the earbuds around and charge them anywhere anytime.
  • Built-in microphones support phone calls and voice assistant with either or both earbuds. You can hear voice from both earbuds in stereo mode.

TiVo’s skip button changed how we watch TV forever

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 15:16
Photo by Avery White for The Verge

In today’s digital age, it sometimes feels like hardware has taken a back seat to the software that drives our devices. Button of the Month will look at what some of those buttons and switches are like on devices old and new to appreciate how we interact with them on a physical, tactile level.

For years, the word TiVo was synonymous with DVRs. Launched back in the heady days of 1999, the product came on the scene and quickly changed how we watched TV forever — and it all started with a button on its remote that represented a major leap forward in technology.

Before TiVo, you could record shows from a live broadcast on VHS tapes, but the process was limited and costly. You’d need a VCR that could record shows plus the tapes themselves,...

This AirPods case case looks like a Game Boy

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 15:11

Do you need a case for your AirPods case? Perhaps not, but the accessory accessories are increasingly popular, whether your personal style extends to crocheting or leather. And what if it looked as cute as this Game Boy-inspired design from Elago?

Making things that make your gadgets look like other gadgets is kind of Elago’s thing. Witness their stands that turn the Apple Watch into a Macintosh or an iPod, for example. The AW5 Game Boy case is available in black or the Game Boy’s classic light grey color scheme, which would seem the obvious pick. Elago says it’ll still work with wireless chargers.

Both versions are on sale now for $12.99.

BTS fans didn’t break TikTok; a broken link did

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 14:36
Photo by Manny Carabel / FilmMagic

Like all things related to popular K-pop boy band BTS, pandemonium broke out online yesterday when the group debuted a clip of their new single on TikTok, only for part of the app to stop working in response.

Not long after the clip was posted, a section of TikTok’s search function — one dedicated to looking up particular sounds, like a song track — started displaying error messages. People trying to use the specific search function, including multiple Verge staffers, were greeted with messages saying the app was unable to connect to a network. The rest of TikTok functioned properly, but BTS fans quickly started tweeting about how they broke the app by flooding the app trying to find the song.

It’s not a bad guess; the BTS “army,” as...

10 Netflix alternatives that stream movies and TV shows for free

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 14:29

Netflix just released its list of March 2020 movie releases and series releases, reminding us yet again why it is far and away the best streaming service month can buy. Next month alone, Netflix will release a staggering 55 different original movies, shows, and specials over the course of March. What's more, that doesn't even cover all of the content being added to Netflix's catalog from other studios. There are 33 new titles being added to Netflix just on March 1st, and then another 13 movies and full seasons of shows spread out over the course of the month.

It goes without saying that if you have Netflix, you always have something to watch. In fact, there's almost too much great content to watch, which is why we put together several roundups each month sharing recommendations of movies and shows you should try. Our most recent roundup showcased 10 movies and shows on Netflix that you might've missed in February, and we've received a ton of great feedback so check it out if you missed it. As great as Netflix is, however, not everyone wants to pay $13 or $16 each month to access the service. Even the $9 Basic plan adds up if you're on a budget, and the plan itself is too limiting for most people to bother with. If you've been looking for great alternatives to Netflix that don't cost quite as much money, we're going to do you one better: We've rounded up 10 Netflix alternatives that let you stream movies and TV shows absolutely free.

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 14:00

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox Series X console has already been announced, though plenty of important details are still forthcoming. We know the name of the next-generation gaming rig — Xbox Series X, duh — and we know exactly what it'll look like because Microsft has already shown off the box's finished design. It's not exactly the most exciting hardware design out there, but who cares? All that matters is what's inside the box, and we're expecting some killer next-gen specs.

We also know Microsoft is planning to announce a ton of new Xbox Series X games at E3 2020 this summer, and we can't wait. What we don't yet know, however, is how much the new Xbox is going to cost.

It's probably a safe bet to assume that the Xbox Series X is going to cost at least $499.99 when it's released ahead of the holidays later this year. Google is cracking down on Android apps that track your location in the background

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 13:48
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Google is placing new restrictions on which Android apps can track your location in the background, with a new review process that will check whether an app definitely needs access to the data. The changes were announced in a blog post to Android developers earlier this week. Google says that from August 3rd all new Google Play apps that ask for background access will need to pass review, expanding to all existing apps on November 3rd.

Although location tracking is an essential feature for many apps and services, it can be pretty invasive when apps indiscriminately ask for location access. Background tracking is even worse, because it means that you might be completely unaware of which apps on your phone are tracking you at any moment in...

Google is widely expected to launch two smartphone series this year, including the mid-range Pixel 4a that should be unveiled in May and the Pixel 5 flagship that’s set to launch in October. While it’s only February, we’ve got leaks for both devices already, and the conclusion is clear when it comes to design. The ugly Pixel 4 (image above) will be succeeded by much better-looking handsets. However, the Pixel 4a will have a much better screen design than the Pixel 5, and we have a new render of the upcoming budget Pixel for you.

Galaxy S20 preorders are live: Here’s everything you need to know

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 12:50

Samsung last week unveiled the phones we’ve been discussing for the better part of the year, including the Galaxy Z Flip foldable and the new Galaxy S20 flagship series. The Z Flip was the first handset to hit stores, going on sale last Friday. The S20 preorders went live on Friday, with Samsung and its partners expected to ship the handset on March 6th. All three Galaxy S20 versions, including the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra, come with 5G support, and you won’t be able to score a 4G-only variant in the US. That also means all of them are more expensive than we’d have expected, with prices starting at $999 for the cheapest option. We’ve already told you that it might be a good idea to wait a few more months for the prices to go down. It always happens with Android phones, and last year’s S10 series proved price cuts arrive a lot sooner than expected. We’ve also shown you a few deals that make Samsung’s prices much easier to swallow, especially if you’re looking to trade-in an old device fro the brand new phones. But carriers also have their own S20 deals in place that might get you additional savings right now.

Bloomberg’s debate performance shows that Facebook ads will only get you so far

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 12:00
Democratic presidential candidate former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is shown on a screen during a debate watch party at the candidate’s field office on Wednesday in the Brooklyn borough of New York City | Photo by Jeenah Moon/Getty Images

As of Tuesday, Michael Bloomberg had spent $233 million on digital and television ads. This spending purchased him, according to an impressive visualization from the Washington Post, 30,000 digital ads a minute. The billionaire candidate for the Democratic nomination has spent more on advertising than every other Democratic candidate combined. Bloomberg has also spent much more than President Trump, who has invested a relatively paltry $19 million in digital and TV ads.

One view of the 2016 election is that it was won by the candidate who had the superior mastery of Facebook — Trump, whose campaign did a now-legendary job of creating and iterating on direct-response ads that built up his email list and donor rolls while also continuously...

LG V60 ThinQ shown off in leaked press render

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 11:46
Image; Android Headlines

A press render claiming to be LG’s unannounced V60 ThinQ has been published by Android Headlines, showing a handset with a small teardrop notch, a dedicated Google Assistant button, and a gold frame. Although not confirmed by the leak, the phone was expected to be announced at the now-cancelled Mobile World Congress. Text on the phone’s display reads February 24th, the day MWC 2020 was originally scheduled to begin.

Although the image doesn’t show the rear of the device, a previous leak suggested that the LG V60 ThinQ will be equipped with a quad-camera array, four microphones, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, making LG one of the few manufacturers to still offer it on a flagship device (LG does love a good DAC). The leak also claimed the...
