Google Forms could secure Nevada’s caucuses, or throw reporting into chaos

Nevada’s Democratic caucuses take place this Saturday, and the state may not be ready. In the wake of Iowa’s disastrous caucuses, the Nevada Democratic Party has scrapped its plans to use a reporting app called Shadow, but the replacement system isn’t inspiring confidence.

Over the past week, party officials have blasted social media requesting volunteers with a solid grasp on Google tools to help staff the caucuses as technical assistance. According to Bloomberg, the Nevada Democratic Party held another set of training classes on Thursday to teach volunteers how to use their iPads and new tools. In an even more concerning move, the party hasn’t pledged to release the final results the same day as the caucuses either, raising concerns...

A massive new planet that dwarfs Jupiter was just found lurking nearby

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 19:36

In our solar system, Jupiter is king. It's far larger than the other planets in our system and it absolutely dwarfs Earth. But in the grand scheme of things, Jupiter isn't really all that impressive. It's big, sure, but compared to other gas giants in our neck of the galactic woods, it's just a little fella.

Researchers using data from the Gaia sky survey have identified a gas giant not far from Earth that puts Jupiter to shame. It's not just a little bit bigger than our nearby gas giant... it's roughly ten times the size. Yeah, it's huge, and it's only around 330 light years from Earth.

Arlo Pro 3 security cameras now support Apple’s HomeKit smart home platform, which lets you manage your gadgets (lights, cameras, etc.) through the Home app on your iOS device. The cameras originally launched last September without support for HomeKit, but it has now arrived.

If you want to use your Pro 3 with HomeKit, you’ll need to have it connected to an Arlo SmartHub base station version VMB4540. If you’re not sure which SmartHub you have, you can check by using the Arlo app or logging into your account on Arlo’s website. (Here’s a guide from Arlo on how to do that.)

Arlo says that HomeKit compatibility with other SmartHubs and base stations will be supported in the future.

The Arlo Pro, Pro 2, and Ultra also support HomeKit with...

Google’s Stadia adds four SteamWorld games to its lineup

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 19:10
SteamWorld Dig 2

Google’s streaming-based Stadia game service has had a rocky start since it launched last year, but Google has been trying to bolster that with more games. The latest are four titles from the SteamWorld series: SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Dig 2, SteamWorld Heist, and SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech.

For those unfamiliar with the series, SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Dig 2 are more metroidvania-style exploration games that see players digging their way through a vast underground world. SteamWorld Heist is a turn-based strategy game with an emphasis on a bullet-bouncing mechanic. And SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a roleplaying card game.”

Of those four games, SteamWorld Dig 2 and SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech will be...

How can you say no to better home Wi-Fi coverage for $16?

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 19:07

Wi-Fi is everything. Seriously, can you imagine life without it? You're probably connected to Wi-Fi right now as you're reading this, regardless of whether you're on a smartphone, laptop, tablet, or even a desktop computer. Running cables is a pain in the neck and when it comes to mobile devices, there's always a little stress involved with knowing that you're inching toward a soft data cap or burning through extra battery using 4G LTE or even 5G data. Wi-Fi is faster, it's unlimited, and a lot of times it's totally free.

Of course, Wi-Fi giveth and Wi-Fi taketh away. If you have spotty coverage on your home network, it can be seriously stressful and aggravating. Is there anything worse than venturing into that one Wi-Fi dead spot in your house while you're in the middle of doing something? A lot of people think that the only way to fix the problem is by buying a new wireless router, and it's true that there are tons of Wi-Fi routers on sale at great prices right now. Before you go that route, however, there's another option you should definitely try first.

Wi-Fi range extenders work with any wireless router you already have to extend the range of your home wireless network. Simply plug the extender into the wall near any areas that have spotty coverage and you'll be shocked at how much better your Wi-Fi coverage is in the surrounding area. If you want to find out for yourself what a difference a good Wi-Fi extender can make, it just so happens that the best-selling TP-Link WA855RE Wi-Fi Range Extender that retails for $30 is on sale right now on Amazon for just $15.99. That's an incredible price for such a popular model, and it works remarkably well. In fact, it has nearly 23,000 5-star ratings on Amazon.

TP-Link | N300 WiFi Range Extender | Up to 300Mbps | WiFi Extender, Repeater, Wifi Signal Boost…: $15.99

The only issue you might have is that this model maxes out at 300Mbps. If you're extending your wireless network to an area where you're mainly going to be using your smartphone or anything else that doesn't really need a ton of bandwidth, the WA855RE model is a fantastic option. On the other hand, if you're going to be doing a lot of streaming or gaming in that area, you'll definitely want to upgrade to the TP-Link RE220 Wi-Fi Range Extender instead. It's more than twice as fast with a top speed of 750Mbps, and it's on sale right now on Amazon for just $22.99.

TP-Link AC750 WiFi Range Extender | Covers Up to 1500 Sq.ft and 32 Devices | Dual Band WiFi Rep…: $22.99

If you were unaware that simple devices like this existed, we're happy we can open your eyes to the fact that fixing your home Wi-Fi network doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. If this isn't news to you but you were waiting for a good deal on a popular Wi-Fi extender model before making a purchase, we guarantee that you won't find a better deal than these two.

Google is indexing WhatsApp group chat links, making even private groups discoverable

Invitations to WhatsApp group chats are being indexed by Google, making the invite links —including links to private group chats — discoverable and available to anyone who wants to join, Motherboard reports.

Journalist Jordan Wildon said on Twitter that he discovered that WhatsApp’s “Invite to Group Link” feature lets Google index groups, making them available across the internet since the links are being shared outside of WhatsApp’s secure private messaging service.

Motherboard was able to find private groups using specific Google searches (and the results included a lot of porn-sharing groups). Once they joined a group — which was intended for NGOs accredited by the UN — they had access to all of the participants and their phone...

iOS 14 is a chance for Apple to lower its walls

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 18:34
Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

I have a love-hate relationship with my iPhone. I love the hardware, Apple’s attention to detail in iOS, and the quality of apps that developers have created. But I hate Apple’s walled garden that limits how I use my iPhone every day. I can’t change my default browser; every time I click an email address, I’m forced into an inferior iOS email client; and Apple’s tight OS restrictions mean customization and app features are limited compared to Android.

Rumors suggest Apple is weighing improving some of these restrictions in iOS 14. This upcoming OS update could be the ideal opportunity for Apple to lower its walls a bit, just as regulators in the US and Europe are starting to ask questions about how Apple exerts control over its mobile...
