A new Netflix docuseries heads inside Bill Gates’ brain, but it keeps getting sidetracked

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 17:32
Photo by Saeed Adyani / Netflix

Software magnate Bill Gates is one of the most famous people in the world, but the public barely knows him. Gates has been a household name for decades for two reasons: he was the face of Microsoft during an era when the company’s products became ubiquitous, and, perhaps more notably, he’s very, very rich. Yet, he’s never been the kind of celebrity whose personal life and political opinions are splashed across the tabloids and social media. And unlike the late Steve Jobs — his contemporary and occasional rival — Gates is rarely discussed in terms of some ineffable mystique.

The title of Davis Guggenheim’s three-part Netflix documentary Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates (which debuts on Friday, September 20th) speaks to its...

New Pokémon leeks

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 17:15

Pokémon Sword is adding an exclusive evolution to the series’s original duck, Farfetch’d. Sirfetch’d, a fighting type, gallantly wields a leek lance and shield combo. I haven’t adored a knight so dearly since the last time I saw Sir Ian McKellen in a halfway decent X-Men movie, but The Pokémon Company really outdid itself.

Farfetch’d evolves into Sirfetch’d “after experiencing many battles” (like... most... pokémon?), and the genteel duck uses its beloved leek as a lance. Sirfetch’d is a noble creature that makes a “point of always battling fairly.” I want it to step on my neck. It is too honorable to do so.

Like every plant-loving man I’ve met in Brooklyn, Sirfetch’d is extremely into its leek. “It maintains this leek over the span of...

YouTube introduces a massive ad box to its TV app

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 17:00

The homepage on YouTube’s TV app is about to feature a major disruption that will be familiar to people who use the main site: a giant advertisement at the top of the page.

The large ad is referred to as the YouTube Masthead, and it’s considered a prime advertisement slot. Much like the masthead box on YouTube’s regular site, advertisements on the TV app will “autoplay for viewers after a few seconds on all compatible devices,” according to a Google press release.

The YouTube TV app is an important platform for advertisers, according to Google. Daily watch time on the app tops 250 million hours per day. Plus, Google says that people remember seeing ads on the TV app slightly more than they do on regular TV. Still, it’s hard to ignore...

8bitdo now has a wireless six-button Genesis Mini controller

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 17:00

One problem with mini classic consoles: the controller cord is always too dang short. One further problem with the otherwise-excellent Sega Genesis Mini: it ships with a three-button controller, so Street Fighter II is basically unplayable. What if there were a wireless six-button pad available?

Well, now there is. The controller comes courtesy of 8bitdo, which shouldn’t be a surprise — the company has made similar well-regarded replicas for many other consoles, including the original Genesis. This version for the Mini appears to be the same existing M30 2.4G controller, in fact, just bundled with a new USB dongle that can be plugged into the console’s USB ports. That also means it’ll work with the Nintendo Switch.

The controller is...

Step aside, long Furbies — long Hatchimals have arrived

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 17:00
Image: Hatchimals

Hatchimals, the line of best-selling collectible toys, which includes the robotic stuffed bird that “hatches” itself into existence, is debuting a new, very long addition today. Its name is Llalacorn: it’s part unicorn, part llama, and it’s got an extendable neck that lets it grow up to 32 inches tall. Llalacorn has style and glamour, and it’s coming for Long Furby’s spot as the de facto cursed toy of the internet.

Spin Master’s Hatchimals WOW comes in purple or pink, but you won’t know which one you get until you hatch it by tilting the egg back and forth. When it’s ready, the rainbow eyes will light up through the shell, and it’ll stretch out its neck and push the egg top off. It’ll take five minutes for it to assume its final form....

Netflix in October 2019: Every new movie and TV series coming next month, and everything leaving

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 16:58

With just a couple weeks left in the month of September, we're finally closing in on the launches of Disney+ and Apple TV+. Both video streaming services are expected to launch in November, and once they do (especially Disney's), the streaming wars will kick into a new gear. As such, I expected October to be a banner month for Netflix, but there isn't nearly as much high-profile original content as I expected there to be this month.

There are still plenty of highlights, of course, including the third season of Big Mouth, season 5 of Peaky Blinders, and a new show called Living with Yourself, which stars Paul Rudd playing both himself and his doppelganger. There are also a few notable third-party additions, such as Men in Black and The Karate Kid.

Anime trolls tried to silence a #MeToo campaign with legal threats — and got shut down hard

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 16:52

For years, Vic Mignogna has been a missing stair in the anime world, a subject of backchannel gossip and extraordinary precautions by women in his circle. He’s one of the most famous voice actors in the business, but when two of his colleagues — voice actors Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial — shared their own stories of harassment at Mignogna’s hands in February, the anime community erupted. Mignogna’s production companies dropped him; conventions rescinded their invitations.

It was a classic #MeToo story, complete with backlash from an aggrieved fan base. Mignogna’s accusers were doxxed. Photos of Marchi’s home and car appeared on a message board that trolls used to organize their harassment, along with the names of her children. One...

HP Elite Dragonfly is a Project Athena laptop that lasts over 24 hours on a charge

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 16:12

Intel came up with a neat idea for laptops not too long ago called Project Athena, and we’re finally starting to see the first Athena-ready notebooks come out. These machines are essentially supposed to be light and slim ultrabooks powered by Intel’s latest chips, and they're ready to deliver a few additional features that most consumers will love. To get the Athena designation, laptops have to feature all-day battery life and fast-charging support, an always-on internet connection including 4G support, instant-on functionality, and AI features.

We’ve already seen some Project Athena-ready notebooks launch recently, and HP’s new Elite Dragonfly is the latest addition to the Athena family. Among its highlights we have amazing battery life, with the Elite Dragonfly supposed to last up to 24.5 hours on a single charge — of course, that estimate involves light activity, but it's still quite remarkable.

AI can’t protect us from deepfakes, argues new report

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 16:05

A new report from Data and Society raises doubts about automated solutions to deceptively altered videos, including machine learning-altered videos called deepfakes. Authors Britt Paris and Joan Donovan argue that deepfakes, while new, are part of a long history of media manipulation — one that requires both a social and a technical fix. Relying on AI could actually make things worse by concentrating more data and power in the hands of private corporations.

“The panic around deepfakes justifies quick technical solutions that don’t address structural inequality,” says Paris. “It’s a massive project, but we need to find solutions that are social as well as political so people without power aren’t left out of the equation.”

“If there’s...

Hori’s Split Pad Pro for the Nintendo Switch gives you a real controller on the go

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 16:03

As much as I love the portable aspect of the Nintendo Switch, I cannot pretend that it fits my hands, which are roughly the size of the Mano del Desierto and cramp up after any significant length of time with Celeste. I imagine the upcoming Switch Lite will only make matters worse. So when I saw that Hori, maker of the D-pad Joy-Con replacement, was working on a pair of large, officially licensed pro-style controllers designed for use in the Switch’s handheld mode, I knew I had to check it out.

The $49.99 Split Pad Pro is exactly what it sounds like. Take a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, split it in two, and add Joy-Con rails to each side, and you’re pretty much there. It turns the Switch into a bizarrely long handheld that is in no way...

New Knives Out trailer pits Daniel Craig against an obnoxious, dysfunctional family

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 15:50

There’s nothing better than a whodunnit story based on a totally dysfunctional family full of obnoxious people — except maybe a whodunnit involving a Southern accent-touting Daniel Craig as he tries to solve a murder.

The new trailer for Knives Out, the next movie from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, dives a little deeper into the tangled messiness of a wealthy American family following the suspicious death of its patriarch. The rapid-fire quips and tone-deaf insensitivity to each other and the situation they find themselves in feel ripped straight out from an episode of HBO’s Succession, which also follows a wealthy American family as its members try to best each other.

There are some clear winners in this trailer,...

This iPhone 11 Night mode photo sample is going to blow your mind

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 15:26

Well, the early reviews are in and it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that bloggers and tech journalists love Apple's new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max. Early reviewers rarely say otherwise, of course, but this time around they also have a fairly major upgrade to work with. Early on in the rumor cycle, it appeared as though this year's big iPhone update was going to be a fairly minor one. Early details from insiders were anything but impressive and leaked renders showed an iPhone 11 series that looked almost exactly like the iPhone XR and iPhone XS models from 2018. As it turns out, all of those renders completely missed the many subtle design changes Apple made to its 2019 iPhone models, which makes total sense when you consider the fact that they were based merely on basic design files that were stolen from the Foxconn factory where Apple's iPhones are manufactured. Those files contain only the basic dimensions and details so all of the subtle changes that Apple made were nowhere to be found.

While the new design of Apple's iPhone 11 series smartphones is indeed sleek, the power upgrade and the new features are where the phones really shine. At the top of everyone's lists will likely be the huge battery life improvements that amount to as much as an additional 5 hours of usage time on the iPhone 11 Pro Max. But there's plenty more that's ready to wow us when the new iPhone 11 series hits store shelves on Friday, September 20th, and it appears as though the new cameras on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro really shine this year.

North now lets you order Focals smart glasses by taking a 3D scan of your face

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 15:21
Image: North

North’s Focals smart glasses have had pretty limited reach so far, requiring potential buyers to visit one of two boutique stores that the company runs in Brooklyn and Toronto. (There are also pop-up showrooms elsewhere from time to time.) But now, the company is widening the availability significantly by using Apple’s TrueDepth camera — the depth-scanning system on iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max — to find the right fit without requiring an in-person visit.

The new Focals Showroom app will gather measurements for your face with a 3D scan, let you preview how the different colors of Focals will look on you, upload a prescription, and place an order. “Shortly after, we’ll ship your Focals directly to you with set-up...
