Fortnite will let players mute the Rickroll emote in order to avoid getting copyright claimed

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 22:11

Fortnite introduced its Rick Astley-inspired emote just one week ago, and the company has already rolled out an update to let PC players mute the music in response to complaints: creators said they were getting copyright claims over the licensed track that plays when the emote is used.

When a player uses the “Never Gonna” emote, part of Astley’s famous song, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” begins to play and their character starts dancing along. The addition marked one of the biggest songs backing a Fortnite emote — and that’s what led to trouble. YouTube creators who played Fortnite and uploaded videos that included the emote got caught by YouTube’s copyright detection system; essentially, the company that owns the rights to Astley’s track...

Bethesda follows Activision in pulling games from Nvidia’s GeForce Now

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 22:04
Image: Nvidia

Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service has had a somewhat rocky launch since it exited beta earlier this month, and it’s getting even rockier. The company says it’s now losing games from major publisher Bethesda Softworks, which owns Bethesda Game Studios series like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls as well as id Software franchises like Doom. According to Nvidia, one title that will stick around is Wolfenstein: Youngblood, for reasons the company is not disclosing.

This announcement comes just a week after GeForce Now lost access to all Activision Blizzard titles due to a licensing dispute. Apparently, Nvidia had access to Activision Blizzard titles when GeForce Now was still in beta, but it never got full permission once the service...

10 movies to watch on Netflix before they’re removed in March

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 22:01

Every once in a while, Netflix loses a bunch of blockbuster movies all at once, and that is, unfortunately, the case for the month of March. The biggest blow has to be the loss of Black Panther, which is finally joining the vast majority of the other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies on Disney+ next month. Slowly but surely, Disney is completing its full collection of Marvel movies (but it's going to be a bit before Infinity War joins the party).

Two other major losses are that of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. As most of you know, these are two of the best fantasy epics in movie history, and seeing the entire trilogy taken off of Netflix is a bummer. Return of the King was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won all of them, including Best Picture, making it the first fantasy movie to win the most coveted award in film.

The cheaper Nintendo Switch is getting a new color option, and preorders just went live on Amazon

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 21:32

The Nintendo Switch has been nothing short of a smash hit for Nintendo, with cumulative sales that have already topped the SNES and climbed north of 52 million units. Unlike the Wii U that was an absolute flop for Nintendo, the Switch doesn't try to recapture the magic of the original Nintendo Wii. Instead, it creates its own unique magic thanks to a convertible design that allows gamers to "switch" between using a portable console and a home console. Of course, mobile is the way of the world these days, so what happens for gamers who never plan to connect the Switch to a TV?

That's exactly why Nintendo came up with the Switch Lite, a stripped-down version of the Switch that eliminates the convertible aspect and slashes a whopping 30% off the price — instead of costing $300 like the regular Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite is only $199.99.

Nintendo initially released the Lite model in three different colors, and they're all top sellers. Now, Nintendo is adding a fourth color to its lineup — Coral — and it just because available for preorder on Amazon. It's set to be released on April 3, so you don't have long at all to wait. If you don't preorder one though, there's a good chance you'll have trouble finding one on the release date.

Is the Switch Lite right for you? If you only plan to use your Switch as a portable console, then you can definitely use the Lite version. It still plays the same games and you can still connect multiple Joy-Cons for multiplayer gaming, but you'll save $100 that can be better spent on new Switch games and accessories. It's an awesome console set to be released in an awesome new color, so definitely check it out.

Nintendo Switch Lite - Coral
  • Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
  • For every member of your family, there's a member of ours
  • Optimized for personal, handheld play, Nintendo Switch Lite is a small and light Nintendo Switch system

Nintendo Switch Lite - Coral - Switch: $199.96

If you'd rather get the full Switch experience — with a model that, you know, "switches" — you'll be happy to know that the regular Nintendo Switch is in stock right now on Amazon as well. It's actually a great time to pick one up because tons of popular Switch games are on sale right now on Amazon at discounts up to $40!

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy‑Con
  • Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
  • This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 to 9 hours
  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy‑Con - HAC-001(-01): $299.00

Finally, you can also find great deals today on Amazon if you're looking for Nintendo Switch accessories. The awesome $70 Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is on sale today for just $59, and you can save $10 or more on Joy-Con controllers in just about any color combination.

Company buying .org offers to sign a contract banning price hikes

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 21:12
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Ethos Capital, the company controversially buying the .org top-level domain, is trying to appease critics with a set of new rules. The legally binding agreements would ban steep fee increases for nonprofit domain holders, and they would establish an independent “stewardship council” that could veto attempts at censorship or inappropriate data use. The rules would kick in if Ethos successfully acquires Public Interest Registry (PIR), a nonprofit organization that manages .org.

ICANN, which oversees the internet’s top-level domains, is currently scrutinizing the acquisition. President and CEO Göran Marby previously expressed discomfort with the deal, and PIR announced today that it’s extending the review period until March 20th.

An AI developed a new antibiotic that could save the day

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 21:03

Modern medicine has a big problem, and it stems from the overuse of antibiotics. For years, doctors have feared that the go-to antibiotics that are relied on to kill off infections would begin to fail, as new so-called "superbug" infections found a way around them. That's already started to happen, and the arms race between dangerous microorganisms and scientists is being waged every day.

Now, a team of researchers from MIT has developed a new type of antibiotic that may work against antibiotic-resistant infections. Well, the researchers themselves didn't develop it... they told a computer to do it for them, and it worked.

Galaxy Z Flip reviews: Looks cool, but you might want to save your money

BGR - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 20:40

To be honest, I've never quite understood the appeal of foldable phones. From my vantage point, the notion of a foldable smartphone is eerily reminiscent of Google Glass to the extent that it's a cool and futuristic product without real mainstream appeal. In short, foldable phones appear to provide solutions to usability problems that don't exist.

That notwithstanding, Samsung is as committed as ever to the idea. After the debacle that was the Galaxy Fold, Samsung went back to the drawing board and came up with a new foldable phone it calls the Galaxy Z Flip, a device that looks far more intriguing and useful than the Galaxy Fold. For starters, the Z Flip opens up vertically as opposed to horizontally, which lends itself to a more natural user experience.

Fortnite’s wonderfully weird personality is back in latest season

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 20:37

Fortnite is weird again — and I couldn’t be happier. The game’s latest season finally launched yesterday and, on the surface at least, it seems like a standard update. It has a new secret agent theme, with opposing factions and lots of new stealth gameplay options. But look beyond the well-tailored suits and you’ll find something even more notable: Fortnite’s offbeat personality is back in full force.

That’s something that was desperately missing from the previous season. When Fortnite kicked off its ambitious reboot to chapter 2 in September of last year, it felt exciting at first. Everything was new again. But that initial excitement eventually waned.

The first season dragged on for a long time — six months, or twice as long as a...

Netflix’s Gentefied follows a Mexican American family in the heart of a gentrifying LA neighborhood

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 20:07

In Gentefied, everyone knows the score. That’s the dark joke about being a young person of color in the US, where access to information is more equitable than the power to use that information. It’s easy to know exactly how you’re being shut out of opportunity and hard to do anything about it. For the Mexican family at the heart of Gentefied, the game is clearly rigged, and winning it might cost more than it’s worth.

Netflix’s new half-hour dramedy from producer America Ferrera and writer / creator duo Linda Yvette Chavez and Marvin Lemus follows a trio of cousins who struggle to keep their grandpa’s taco shop afloat in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights neighborhood. This is harder than it’s ever been: gentrification is sweeping through the...

Twitter bot @real_human_vc is coming for your thought leaders

The verge - Fri, 02/21/2020 - 20:05
Photo by Kimberly White/Getty Images for Fortune

Spend enough time on Twitter and you’ll start to discern patterns in the scrolling chaos that feels a little like the internet’s id: the grudges, the feuds, the wet-brained political chatter, and the general flatulences tooted out by otherwise smart people. In other words: the state of play on the board. (As the editor Willy Staley might point out: there is a type of tweet for every type of guy.)

While much of Twitter’s utility is derived from its function as an echo chamber — and while a lot of the fun comes from seeing just how large your favorite prominent person’s blindspots are — the best stuff on the site comes out of people using the platform as it’s intended to be used, which is to say, as a broadcasting tool. There is a...
