Time is running out to send your name to Mars on the 2020 rover

BGR - 10 hours 43 min ago

If there's one thing you can say about NASA it's that the space agency really does do its best to make its projects accessible to even the most casual space fans. In recent years, NASA has made a habit out of sending the names of everyday people along for the ride during some of its most high-profile missions, and the upcoming Mars 2020 launch will be no different.

Back in May, NASA opened submissions for names to be included on the Mars 2020 mission. The names, which will be printed in almost impossibly small text on a chip included on the Mars 2020 rover, are being gathered via a sign-up form on the agency's website. Now, with just a couple of weeks left before submissions are closed forever, NASA is making its "final boarding call."

OnePlus 7T Pro render shows familiar design with a new camera sensor

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 23:35
Image: @Onleaks / iGeeksBlog

The OnePlus 7T Pro isn’t expected to come to the United States, as it doesn’t look like that much of an upgrade over the impressive 7 Pro from earlier this year. But a new press render of the phone from @Onleaks and iGeeksBlog indicates that OnePlus is adding a new sensor to the side of the triple-camera system. It’s likely a time-of-flight sensor, which is something that many phone makers are experimenting with lately.

Otherwise, the 7T Pro looks identical to the 7 Pro, with the same pop-up camera, tiny bezels, and even down to the blue finish. 9to5Google notes the shade is a little lighter than the 7 Pro, but that might just be the angle of this specific image. Just yesterday, OnePlus itself offered a first glimpse of the standard...

If you haven’t cut the cord yet, this survey might change your mind

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 23:33

As if anyone needed a reminder that the TV landscape continues to evolve, NBC announced this week that its forthcoming streaming service -- named Peacock, after the network's iconic logo -- will be the home of a slew of content both new and old. The latter includes classic comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation, adding NBC's streamer that launches in April to the long list of services coming soon from Apple, Disney, and other big players.

One obvious consequence of the launch of these and other services: The inexorable growth in cord-cutting, as consumers abandon the cable TV industry in favor of streaming options that offer better pricing and convenience. And it's with that in mind that two new surveys are out -- from Roku and Consumer Reports -- which both shine a new light on this unstoppable trend.

Google canceled the Pixel Watch years ago and never looked back

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 23:06

We’ve come across rumors detailing Google’s so-called Pixel Watch with some regularity, but the company never made a Wear OS gadget of its own that could compete against the Apple Watch.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch kept growing, having virtually no rival in the market that stands a chance against the Apple Watch Series 5. But it turns out that Google did have a Pixel Watch ready back in fall of 2016 when it launched the first Pixel phones, but the company canceled the device in the 11th hour and never looked back.

Facebook’s new Portal TV turns your television into a video chat monitor

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 22:43

The average Facebook user out there likely wasn’t secretly hoping the world’s biggest social networking company (and frequent privacy flouter) would release a new video chat device that could be installed in the home. Nevertheless, Facebook has stepped up to do so anyway -- in actuality, announcing three new such products under its Portal brand of video chat devices that include a new Portal, Portal Mini and Portal TV.

Manufacturer halts distribution of generic Zantac after cancer-causing impurity discovery

BGR - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 22:20

When the FDA issued a bulletin alerting everyone to the presence of a possible cancer-causing impurity in the popular heartburn drug marketed as Zantac, the administration stopped short of telling people to stop taking the popular drugs. Now, in the wake of that news, shipments of a generic version of the drug are being halted.

In its release, the FDA noted that samples of the drug known as ranitidine, also sold under the brand name Zantac, tested positive for a potentially cancer-causing agent called N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA. Levels of the carcinogen weren't alarmingly high, but its presence alone was enough to warrant a public alert.

Borderlands 3’s boring, evil YouTubers are a huge missed opportunity

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 22:15

One of the optional missions in Borderlands 3, a cooperative sci-fi shooter that released last week, is to bring a minor character some coffee. The task seems easy enough: go to a cafe, fix a machine, and find a container to hold the brew. Choose to accept it, however, and you’ll meet resistance every step of the way. A dozen people will die in a pitched battle over a single coffee cup in a corporate office. And absolutely nobody will find this strange. It’s morbid, silly, and a good example of Borderlands’ over-the-top parody.

Borderlands launched in 2009, and it’s known for its mashup of post-apocalyptic tropes, space opera, and dark humor. Borderlands 3 repeats a now-familiar formula with mixed success. If you like the games, it’s a...

I got a contact high just reading this bananas profile of WeWork’s founder

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 22:01
Photo by Jackal Pan / Visual China Group via Getty Images

The Verge’s newsroom lights up every time a new WeWork story hits because it’s legitimately one of the wildest companies we’ve ever seen — and we’ve seen some wild ones. (We once went deep covering a company that made a $700 Wi-Fi-connected juicer, which now seems infinitely quaint by comparison.) For one of the best stories you’ll read all year, you must visit The Wall Street Journal today, where Eliot Brown published a captivating profile of Adam Neumann, the CEO and founder of The We Company.

The world has been learning a lot about Neumann’s extraordinary family antics since his failed attempt to IPO for $40 billion. As my colleague Liz Lopatto wrote last month, WeWork is less of a tech company and more of a soap opera. But thanks to...

Medium’s Pocket-like bookmarking feature is live, but pretty limited right now

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 21:53

Medium’s “Save to Medium” bookmarking feature is now live, letting you save articles from across the web to a single interface you can read whenever you want, roughly two weeks after app sleuth Jane Manchun Wong discovered the experimental Pocket- and Instapaper-like feature earlier this month. But in my brief testing this morning, it feels more limited than those dedicated read-it-later services, and frankly, doesn’t seem that useful to me at all.

Introducing 'Save to Medium,' a new feature that lets you save stories from any URL, from any device, and view it in the Medium app https://t.co/I8jru1LOAN pic.twitter.com/9IDnkfj2jQ

Instagram will restrict who can see posts about cosmetic procedures, weight loss products

The verge - Wed, 09/18/2019 - 21:39

Instagram will restrict people under the age of 18 from seeing posts that promote weight loss products or types of cosmetic surgery as part of a new policy that targets a rapidly growing and controversial sect of influencer marketing.

In some cases, posts may be removed entirely, too. Instagram will apply the age restriction in cases where posts include an incentive to buy or are accompanied by a price for a product. The company will remove posts entirely if it “makes a miraculous claim about certain diet or weight loss products, and is linked to a commercial offer such as a discount code.”

Instagram’s advertising guidelines and policies never allowed for the promotion of these products, according to a statement from the company, but...
